9 Tips for Natural Looking Summer Makeup

glowy-summer-makeup

As soon as warmer, sunnier weather comes around, I crave bronzey, glowy makeup that looks a little more natural than my winter look. I’m not amazing at doing makeup by any means…I’ve learned through a lot of trial and error over the years! I’m sure some of these tips will be obvious to some of you, but several of them I’ve just recently tried or figured out, so hopefully you can get a fresh idea from this post!

  1. Use a tinted lip balm

I recently bought this clean beauty tinted lip balm and am officially a fan! A lot of times in the summer I don’t feel like wearing a heavy lipstick or a matte lip, so a tinted balm is a great solution! It looks like my lips, but better, adds a bit of definition and color to my lips, hydrates, and overall gives me the fresh-faced look I love in the summertime.

  2. embrace messy brows

I’m always a fan of big, messy brows, but especially in the summertime. I don’t worry about keeping mine perfectly groomed this time of year, and even like to brush mine upwards before and after I fill them in (with this pencil and spoolie). Again, this adds to a fresh-faced look!

3. concealer first

I recently started covering blemishes and hyperpigmentation spots with a bit of concealer before applying my foundation, and I’ve found I can wear a lot less foundation this way while still keeping problem areas covered. I’ve loved this routine switch-up moving into warmer weather because my makeup feels lighter and looks a bit more natural!

4. leave the bridge of your nose uncovered and freckly

I’ve found I don’t really need any makeup coverage on the upper bridge of my nose, and I love leaving it more “exposed” so that my freckles and natural glow show a bit more. This lends to a more natural look rather than everything being perfectly covered and matte.

5. Blend in bronzer along your hairline

This is something I do year-round, but especially in the summertime because it gives you that naturally glowy, tan look (without the sun damage). It gives you more of a tanned look overall instead of just on your cheeks too.

6. experiment with brown over black

In the warmer months I like to switch to brown eyeliner over black. It still helps to define my eyes, but I feel like it looks a little more natural and blends better with the other makeup colors I’m using. Right now I’m using and loving this pencil (in “Tirmasu”), which I apply into my upper lash line.

7. get creative with setting spray

I’ve always just applied my setting spray after finishing up my makeup, but if you get creative you can use it to both set your makeup and keep it looking more natural. A couple of things to try…

Spritz it on after foundation+concealer but before your setting powder. It will give your setting powder a bit more grip while giving you a dewier look.

You can also try re-spritzing later in the day to both refresh your makeup and add a bit of hydration to the skin!

This is my all-time favorite setting spray, but I just ordered this clean, natural alternative to try out and will report back soon :)

8. add extra glow

I’m always a fan of highlighter, but especially so in the summer months. I try to work with my natural glow rather than fighting it. In the summer I like to dust a little extra highlighter along my forehead, on my upper lip/cupid’s bow and on my chin and nose. I also love to dab some in the inner corners of my eyes, which brightens my eyes and adds to the overall glow. This is my current favorite highlighter because it’s subtle rather than sparkly (and also clean beauty).

9. skip the eyeshadow and use these instead

This is probably my favorite tip of the bunch… I’ve only used eyeshadow a few times in the past couple of months because I’ve been loving the look of some highlighter and bronzer on my lids. Not only is it quick and easy, but it’s also neutral and blends perfectly with the rest of my makeup. I like to dab some highlighter onto my lids, and then lightly blend my bronzer just above my crease for a bit of depth. Try it out and let me know what you think!
